Chronic Abdominal Pain & The Importance of Endoscopy

By Dr Nur Shams Bin Mohd Ali, Consultant General Surgeon, Hospital Seri Botani

Pain (or discomfort) in the abdominal that lingers for weeks or even months is more than just a nuisance. It can interfere with work, sleep, and daily life, leaving many people feeling frustrated and unsure of what to do next. In fact, studies suggest that up to 1 in 4 adults experience recurrent abdominal discomfort at some point, yet many delay seeking proper evaluation. Ignoring persistent pain can mean missing early signs of conditions that are easier to treat when detected sooner.

One of the most valuable tools doctors use to investigate ongoing abdominal pain is an endoscopy. This is a simple and commonly performed procedure where a thin, flexible tube with a tiny camera is gently passed through the mouth to examine the digestive tract. It is usually done under light sedation, so patients are relaxed and comfortable throughout.

What makes endoscopy so important is its ability to provide a clear, real-time view of the inside of the digestive system. Problems such as ulcers, inflammation, acid reflux damage, or even early cancers can be directly seen. In many cases, small tissue samples can also be taken for further testing. This level of detail is something scans and blood tests alone may not always provide.

For patients, this means fewer guesses and more answers. Research shows that endoscopy can identify a clear cause in a significant proportion of patients with persistent upper abdominal pain, allowing doctors to start the right treatment without delay. Early diagnosis not only improves symptom relief but can also prevent more serious complications down the line.

Simply put, endoscopy turns uncertainty into clarity. For anyone living with chronic abdominal pain, it offers a safe, effective, and reassuring way to uncover the cause and take the first step toward lasting relief.
